Antony Gormley - Field for the British Isles

Ed Prosser March 4, 2020

Earlier this year the Arts Council Collection commissioned me to produce a short film exploring Antony Gormley’s Turner prize winning sculptural work, “Field for the British Isles”. consisting of over 40,000 hand sculpted figurines, this is one of the most complicated works held in the Arts Council Collection.

This iteration of ‘Field’ was produced in collaboration with local families in St Helens, Merseyside back in 1993. Under Gormley’s direction, the volunteers spent several days hand sculpting thousands of small clay figurines in a disused school.  Other versions of 'Field' have been made by families of brick makers in Mexico, by children in the Amazon basin, by students and families in Sweden.
